The Law of Sacrifice and Fadhilah

1. Sunnah Muakkadah

The majority of fiqh scholars consider that basically the law of qurbani is a sunnah muakkadah, except if it is recited then the law becomes obligatory, the sunnah of qurbani is as stated by Allah SWT:

So establish prayer for your Lord and make sacrifices. (QS. Al-Kauthar: 2)

The command to make sacrifices is not considered mandatory because this verse is tied to the following hadith of the Prophet Muhammad:

"If it has entered the ten days of the month of Dzulhijjah, and one of you wants to make a sacrifice, then don't let him touch (cut) his hair and skin" (HR. Muslim)

2. Sunnah Ain and Kifayah

Imam An-Nawawi wrote:

“A goat can be slaughtered only for the sacrifice of one person. If one of the household has sacrificed, then the Islamic teachings and the sunnah have become clear for the entire household... Just as the fardu is divided into fardu 'ain and fardu kifayah, the scholars also mention the law of sunnah sacrifice as well. Sacrifice worship is sunnah (kifayah) for every house "

The sunnah 'ain means the sunnah for each individual, where every Muslim is sunnah 'ain for all of them to make qurban, at least once in a lifetime. Whereas sunnah kifayah means sunnah for one family, where it is preferable that in one large family consisting of husband, wife and children there is one who makes qurban each year.
