Agriculture plays a pivotal role in Rwanda's economy, employing 72% of the working population and contributing to 33% of the national GDP. 75% of Rwanda’s agricultural production comes from smallholder farmers, of which 70% are women, but majority of them lack knowledge and skills on the best practices and the use of agricultural inputs which leads to low yields, harmful human health conditions and adverse effects of climate change. Furthermore, the prices increase and lack of agricultural inputs, Covid-19 and the global war crises have exacerbated the food security problem.

To address these issues, AGRIRESEARCH UNGUKA Ltd has developed SmartInput, a smart farming solution that aims to provide real-time information, personalized best practices, and expert support to farmers, enabling them to optimize farming inputs, adapt to climate change, maximize harvests, keep their records, and improve profitability while safeguarding human health and the environment.

Thanks to app's embedded artificial intelligence network of weather, soil, crops and market data, with a mobile phone in their hand, farmers will know the right amount of agricultural inputs based on their land size and soil types, have access to real time daily weather and market information, and a question and answer interface which give them access to virtual subject matter experts to respond to their questions in real time; all of this at the comfort of their farm.
