However, the new Astra switches to the GM-based Stellantis EMP2 architecture and will come with a plug-in hybrid powertrain option in addition to its combustion engine offering.

The next-generation Astra will be based on the new GM Delta platform and will come with advanced technologies, such as the front-facing camera system first seen on the Insignia. The new Astra will also feature a generation of Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL), providing nine unique beams for improved visibility. The styling of the new Astra is heavily influenced by the new Opel Insignia, with many taller options coming as standard.

The new Opel and Vauxhall Astra vehicles are anticipated to launch in the first half of 2022 and will be equipped with the next-generation Snapdragon automotive cockpit platform. This platform will be used in Astra's Pure Panel fully digital cockpit, featuring an ultra-large high-definition touchscreen display with a new Human Machine Interface (HMI) designed to provide simple, fluid, and intuitive interactions with passengers in the cockpit.

Opel has committed to switching to electric cars in Europe only by 2028, so this will be the last Astra with an internal combustion engine. The Astra is one of the best-known names in the British family car market, alongside its highly successful rivals, the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf.
