The arctic fox is the unique species in the genus Alopex, which belongs to the Canidae family, and is a small fox native to the arctic regions.

The chief prey in the tundra is lemmings, so the white fox is often called the "lemming fox." The reproduction rates of the white fox reflect the lemming population density, which fluctuates cyclically every 3-5 years. When lemmings are plentiful, the white fox can give birth to 18 cubs, but they generally do not breed when food is limited.
