The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 feels familiar, yet different, and I mean that in the best way possible. It looks like a Galaxy Watch, but this iteration is sharper and more sophisticated. The software works like Tizen, but the updated Google Wear OS platform is pragmatic and precise.
Samsung ditched the ‘Active’ branding for its latest lineup, instead pitching a sporty-looking Galaxy Watch 4 as the company’s flagship and a ‘Classic’ version that carries on the luxurious characteristics of last year’s Samsung Galaxy Watch 3.
TechRadar Verdict
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4’s headline feature is a revamp of its software that combines the look and feel of Samsung’s existing Tizen platform and the functionality of Wear OS. It has good fitness features, strong battery life and a comfortable design. There are some compatibility issues, which may frustrate some potential buyers, but largely the Galaxy Watch 4 is an interesting iteration of Samsung’s top smartwatch formula.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is a sequel to one of our favorite smartwatches ever, and it’s the first time in a while that we’ve seen the company embrace Wear OS software. It’s not your typical Wear OS watch though; it’s running Wear OS 3 overlaid with One UI Watch 3, and Google has collaborated with Samsung to create this operating system.

It's worth noting that this isn't the newest model anymore, that honor goes to the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, which were both unveiled in August 2022. Though on paper they don't sound like enormous upgrades - other, perhaps, than when it comes to battery life.

Besides the ECG and the new blood pressure measurement, the monitoring and recording of snoring sounds is interesting. The smartphone helps here - but can it distinguish who exactly the snoring is coming from?

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic are two fantastic smartwatches that we could recommend to most Android users. Those who own Samsung smartphones will feel a little more at home, though, as Samsung's apps and services are injected throughout the whole experience. All in all, these two smartwatches are great showcases for Google and Samsung's Wear OS 3 platform.
Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 is a big deal, and not only for Samsung. It marks a reinvention of the company’s smartwatch line, but also the introduction of new software co-engineered with Google – making this also the debut of the overhauled Wear OS 3.

The good news is that Samsung has mostly nailed the experience. From a hardware perspective the Galaxy Watch 4 is hard to fault, while the new software makes this basically the best smartwatch you can buy that doesn’t have an Apple logo on it – for now at least.

The only real downside is that Samsung is busy erecting a walled garden to rival its Californian rival, and as a result the Galaxy Watch 4 is at its best when paired with a Samsung phone. Other Android owners will at least still find plenty to like, even if a couple features are missing, but iPhone users are left in the cold – this won’t work at all.
