For less than the price of the AirPods, the Beats Studio Buds delivers a good fit, great sound, and active noise cancellation. This is also the first set of Apple-owned Beats earbuds to feature quick pairing with Android devices, albeit at the expense of some key features for Apple users.
Since Apple purchased Beats in 2014, each iteration of Beats headphones and earbuds has become more tied into the Apple ecosystem. That all changes with the Beats Studio Buds, which ditches the Apple H1 chip for a more universal experience across both Apple and Android devices.
Without the tight integration in the Apple ecosystem, does the Studio Buds do enough to stand out from a crowded market of true wireless earbuds?
Beats Studio Buds Plus review: it’s cool to be clear
With better sound, improved noise cancellation, and a standout translucent design, these are everything the original Beats Studio Buds should’ve been.
Beats has stuck to the same outer design for the most part, and that’s good news. Sure, it means the carrying case still lacks wireless charging — you won’t see a Qi charging coil when peering through the back — but it also means that the Studio Buds Plus remain exceedingly comfortable. They’re very discreet, lightweight, and retain the clicky physical buttons on each earbud for controls. But I think the current AirPods Pro gestures are more versatile since you can adjust volume by sliding your finger up or down the touch sensor. If you want to use the long-press gesture on the Beats for volume, you’ll be giving up convenient methods of toggling ANC or activating Siri.
TechRadar Verdict
The Beats Studio Buds are easily the best-sounding earbuds Beats has ever made. They’re comfortable to wear and they sound great, plus they support active noise cancellation. Unfortunately, their call quality isn't great and they're missing Apple's H1 Wireless Chip.
The Beats Studio Buds True Wireless are the Beats Fit Pro True Wireless' mid-range sibling and come in a couple of sleek colorways to match your style. Unlike most other headphones from this manufacturer, these earbuds have a neutral sound profile instead of one that's bass-heavy, making them versatile enough for most types of audio content. They lack an H1 chip, which is unusual for a Beats product. This means you can't seamlessly pair them with your Apple devices. Instead, they feature a 'one-touch pairing' system that works for iOS and Android. On the upside, they support Apple's Spatial Audio feature for a more immersive experience, but this is only supported on compatible apps like Apple Music.
