Statistics app KOSIS

This application is available as a forwarding of the city statistics page www.staedtestatistik.de/kosisapp.html via a browser from your smartphone or PC, but can also be downloaded in Google PlayStore as an app for devices with the Android operating system and used with smartphones or tablets.

The prototype of this application was developed by the Office of Statistics and Urban Research in cooperation with a project group of the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences, which received the 1st place in the category "Interactive Visualizations and Apps" from the international project Year of Statistics. The further development is carried out by the KOSIS community "Mobile application for the representation of small-scale statistics (KOSIS app)".

Description of the functions
This app covers three use cases:

Case 1: The user is in a city for which data is stored. By localization via GPS, radio cells or an access point, the subarea in which the user is located is identified and highlighted in color. The sub-area can be changed via the map or via a selection list, regardless of the position. After selecting one of the topics for the selected sub-area (eg population or election results), the data is displayed and displayed either graphically or in a table after pressing the "View data" button.

Case 2: If the user wants to receive data from another city, ie can not be localized by his position, the city selection can be used to select the city and select a sub-area from the selection list.

Case 3: Regardless of the city in which the user is located, the app offers the possibility of spatial and temporal comparisons, ie. H. Small-scale data can be compared across cities or cities. It is only necessary to have the same topic (eg population list) available for both areas or years. This comparison is realized exclusively via lists, d. H. there is no choice over a map.

For the time reference, the default value is always the most recent year. With buttons and selection menus, a different sub-area, topic or year can be set at any time, and there is also the option of switching back to the graphical sub-area selection of the start page. After the city and sub-area selection, all available tables of salons are always offered as a topic for selection.

In order to include as many topics as possible for many cities in the app, the use of municipal statistics data from the comprehensive feature program of the Inner-city Space Observation (IRB), a cooperation project of the German Cities Association (DST), the Association of German Urban Statistics (VDSt), the municipal statistical information system ( KOSIS Association), the German Institute for Urban Studies (DIfU) and the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR). At present, 49 cities are participating in the IRB, which, with 20.1 million inhabitants in more than 2800 districts, represent about two-thirds of the German metropolitan population. The release for this small-scale statistical data must be made by the responsible municipal statistics office.
