Science Experiments for PC

Sixth grade science is the first year in which students are asked to focus on only one of the major content areas of science.
Life science is the theme.
In this course students learn about many life forms, with emphasis on the human body’s structure and function.
Instruction is delivered through a variety of formats, including lecture, discussion, projects, activities, and experiments.
A science textbook is used as a supplemental instructional resource.

Throughout the year safe laboratory practices are stressed as students explore concepts of science.
Inquiry and scientific methods are employed during laboratory investigations.

The addition this year of the Gideon Welles Greenhouse provides additional laboratory space for students to explore concepts of science.
They will investigate many factors that affect plant growth during their unit on Environmental Science.

The units of study include (but sequence may vary) :

1. What is Life?
+ Characteristics and survival needs of all living organisms
+ Classification of all organisms into six kingdoms

2. Cells and Heredity
+ The basic structures, functions, and processes of cells
+ Cell theory, cell structure, cell reproduction, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, genes, and heredity
+ Simulations of dominant and recessive genes help explain how traits are passed from generation to generation

3. Human Body - Energy Flow Systems
+ Body systems related to respiration
+ How the human body acquires and distributes materials required for energy production
+ Includes study of the digestive, circulatory, and respiratory systems

4. Human Body – Body in Motion
+ Body systems related to how the body is structured and how it functions
Includes study of the skeletal, nervous, and muscular systems

5. Microbes
+ The role of microbes related to our food supply and techniques for preserving food
Treatment (e.g. vaccines and antibiotics) of health issues related to bacteria and viruses

6. Environmental Science
+ Students explore how living things have adapted to the variety of environments found on Earth, and how environmental changes affect species
+ Ecosystems, plants, photosynthesis, food chains, populations, and predator-prey relationships
+ How energy flows through ecosystems and some ways that human actions affect Earth’s environments
+ The GW Greenhouse will serve as a laboratory for investigations related to plant growth and development

7. Feel the Beat
Students perform an inquiry-based task in which they are expected to apply scientific methods to investigate how different exercises (or other stimuli) affect a person’s heart rate.
