Xiaomi smart speaker IR Guide for PC

Smart Speaker IR Control is Xiaomi's latest audio product, at least in the Indian market. It's a modestly priced device for its class with an interesting new feature; It lets you control devices around your home with just your voice, as long as they work with an infrared remote control.

design
The Xiaomi Smart Speaker is a relatively compact device, measuring 14 cm in length and 9.5 cm in width. It is made of matte black plastic which unfortunately shows dust quite easily and requires regular cleaning.

On the front is a four-character, seven-segment LED display that mostly serves as a clock only. The screen is cleverly hidden when it is not lit. When shone through the plastic body, the light is diffused slightly. It is still usually easily visible but it can be difficult to tell if there is a lot of direct light reflecting off the front surface.

Below the screen is the grille for the single downward facing speaker. The grille goes around the device as the sound comes out from all sides. On the back there is a port for the power cable. The device requires a stable power connection and does not contain a battery.

At the top are controls for volume adjustment, play/pause, and microphone mute. In the center is an LED that lights up when you're talking to the speaker and while your requests are being processed. It turns orange when the microphone is muted and stays that way until it is muted back. The light can be distractingly bright at night. Around the controls are far-field microphones.

The build quality, fit, and finish are good enough for a product in this price category. It's not something you interact with physically much, so it doesn't matter much. The design is simple, but not unattractive; It looks kind of like a small Mi Air Purifier. As mentioned before, it requires regular cleaning so that it does not look dirty. The white option would be nice but not served.

programs and features
The Xiaomi smart speaker requires setup through two different apps. First, you need to set it up using the Google Home app. Once this is done, you will need to do further setup through the Mi Home app. You can uninstall both apps afterwards as the device doesn't rely on them for normal smart speaker functionality but they do have some useful features to keep.

The Google Home app lets you do things like adjust audio quality, activate Voice Match for different members of the home, volume levels for alarms, timers, accessibility features, and more. The Mi Home app allows you to change your home automation settings and configure the infrared control feature.

With this feature, you can set up the device to control objects around the room that operate using infrared remote controls. First you need to find the device you are trying to control through the list of supported devices. It can be a TV, set-top box, air conditioner, fan, media player, or projector (it's called a lamp for a reason in the app).

Once configured (it works the same as setting up a universal remote), you can then just use voice commands to control simple tasks like turning the device on or off, or changing the channel or volume. It's a neat feature and it works well, provided both the Xiaomi Smart Speaker and the device being controlled are in the same room and within line of sight.

Apart from that, the Xiaomi Smart Speaker behaves like any other smart speaker from Google, with full support for Google Assistant features as well as Chromecast integration. There's also Bluetooth support, if you'd rather just send audio over Bluetooth.
