One of the religious symbols that is also prone to abuse is fasting. About this, Imam Al Ghazali gave several explanations that lead us to get the full virtue of fasting. The first thing he conveyed was a warning so that we should not limit fasting to only obligatory fasting in the month of Ramadan. The stomach is trained not to eat for a longer duration than normal days. For those who are married, they are trained not to have sex with their partners during the day.

But it turns out, fasting is not merely a physical matter, but the inner forging of lust. All worship prescribed by Allah are certainly full of hidden secrets. Rarely do those who contemplate it and understand it, until it is imbued with Shari'a. There are many actions of fasting people that do not invalidate the fast, but invalidate the great reward.

Imam Muhammad al-Ghazali, a Sufi who really understands the science of fiqh, gave an idea about the secret of fasting. As a fiqh expert as well as a tasawwuf expert, Imam Ghazali does not only see fasting as a bodily worship. Therefore, his idea about the secret of fasting makes us aware of the importance of fasting physically and spiritually.
