Classification of Sunnah Prayers and Their Excellence

Prayer is the most afdhal or most important bodily worship for us to do. Even prayer is more afdhal or more important than fasting.

Imam an-Nawawi Rahimahullah (d. 676 H) has said this in his book al-Majmu' Syarh al-Muhadzdzab:

As for this matter, an authentic and well-known school of thought is that in fact prayer is more complete than fasting, and even more complete than all bodily worship.

Why is that? It turned out that the reason was that the prayer included several acts of worship such as starting with thaharah (ablution), facing the Qiblah, reciting verses from the Koran, reciting dhikr and shalawat to the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wasallam.

And also reinforced by the hadith of the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wasallam below:

From Tsauban radhiyallahu anhu he said: Rasulullah shallallahu alaihi wasallam said: Be consistent with you and you will not be able to maximally. Know that the best of your deeds is prayer. And no one takes care of ablution except those who believe. (Narrated by Ibn Majah)

That is why the scholars of the Salaf paid very much attention to this one worship. Not to mention the 5 obligatory prayers, they still do sunnah prayers because they want to follow and emulate the sunnah of the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wasallam.
