محدث ، پورا نام ابوعیسی محمد بن سورہ بن شداد ۔ آپ کے حالات کے متعلق بہت کم علم ہے۔ کہتے ہیں کہ پیدائشی نابینا تھے۔ بعض کے بقول آخری عمر میں نابینا ہوگئے تھے۔ آپ نے امام احمد ابن حنبل ، امام بخاری اور امام ابوداؤد سے حدیث کا درس لیا اور پھر احادیث جمع کرنے کے لیے خراسان عراق اور حجاز گئے۔ شہر ترمذ میں ، جو بلخ سے کچھ فاصلے پر دریائے آمو کے کنارے واقع ہے ، انتقال کیا، آپ کی دو تصانیف ہم تک پہنچی ہیں۔ ایک آنحضرت کی سیرت ، جس کا نام شمائل ترمذی ہے۔ اور دوسری احادیث کا مجموعہ جو جامع ترمذی کے نام سے مشہور ہے۔ دونوں کتابیں بہت وقیع اور مستند ہیں۔ ان کے علاوہ انساب ، کنیت ، اور اسماء الرجال پر بھی آپ نے کچھ کام کیا تھا مگر یہ کتابیں اب نہیں ملتیں۔سندزیادہ تر سنی مسلمانوں کے نزدیک یہ مجموعہء احادیث پانچویں سب سے مستند کتاب ہے۔
